The Real Windy City

This is in response to Gabriela's post. She's not the only one who's lived somewhere with weird monuments.

I grew up in a small town on the prairies of southern Alberta Canada.

The wind was always blowing.

I have seen a golfer hit a shot into the wind that in calm conditions would have been a 250 to 300 yard drive, but because of the wind, only went about 50 feet.

As kids we used to hold our jackets out like sails and ride our skate boards under wind power.

The trees in town all tilted to the east, because the prevailing wind was from the west.

I hated the wind, but it gave us something to be proud of. Something we could complain about and brag about at the same time.

The town finally erected a monument to the wind - a giant wind gauge:

Wind Gauge

You think that's bad? We thought this was just little breeze. When it was sticking straight out, parallel to the ground... Now that was a WIND!!!!!

Is that thing really blowing at that angle????? That's some serious wind. It would be interesting to place that thing near the shrimp and see if the wind blows hard enough one day to kill the Shrimp.

No, it's not real. The chain was just welded on that angle. But it really was a windy place.

That monument makes me want to break out in a rendition of "The Windy City" from Calamity Jane.

I loved many things about that small town. The wind was not one of them.

HA! That was funny! I grew up in Wyoming and the saying was that if you went outside and the birds were flying backwards you'd better go back in and get your earmuffs. I LOVE the wind guage. In case you really do think Gabriela's town has the corner on wierd landmarks....take a look at the one from my little town (yesterday's post).

Wow! Now, THAT, is wind!! I can't stand wind, so I don't think I'd survive there!

Thanks for coming to see me at my blog, Papa! And for the advice! Come visit again sometime! :-)

Wow! I thought Wyoming was windy! It blows steadily there, only one or two nights a year it gets really out of control and blows away things people thought were permanent. You know, trees, roofs, trailer houses.....
